Perth to Sydney Ultramarathon

Saturday, December 15, 2001

Less than 22 days to go and the final logistical planning is being set in place. For those with relatives in Perth, invite them to stroll down to The Bell Tower around 8:30am, January 6th, for official commencement of the run at 9 o'clock. Depending on our ability to secure a satellite phone, updates and progress reports will range from daily to weekly, with increased coverage in urban areas following Port Augusta and our entry of Victoria and NSW. The crew will be checking emails, so feel free to send any messages. Donation forms can be found on this website and include the best address to which they should be sent.

These words from Pat Farmer: ?The toughest part, without a doubt, of any run is the first 2 weeks. You have to put up with everything, you?re far from home, you?re questioning your reason and purpose, encountering weather conditions, hostility around the course. You feel very passionate about it, but some people aren?t as sympathetic to that, and they question your motives and success.?

?The toughest challenges, mentally, occur in the first 2 weeks, and then just after half way. You?ve been out there for a long period of time, and when I was running across America there were a lot more towns and service stations. A lot of S.A. and W.A. is very isolated.?

?My advice for Don would be to believe in himself, and to never give up on himself. It?s a personal journey of great satisfaction, to take something on and to see it through. There are many reasons not to, but reaching his goal and what he will feel from that will see him through the rest of his life.?

Special thanks to GALAXY IMPORTS, Marrickville and IGA supermarket, Cremorne, for their assistance with food for the run. Also special mention to St Aloysius' College Student Representative Council for they support of Don and The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Crew member Chris Arnold, following two sprained ankles in the leadup to his record rowing attempt, set his challenge at a 12 hour row. "I started 9am and finished 9pm, covering 144787m which I'm chuffed with, as I was not expecting to be able to go for more than a few hours." Money is still coming in for The Fred Hollows Foundation as a result of his efforts.
